Botanical Description: Cypress is an evergreen conifer of the Cupressaceae family that thrives in the temperate and sub-tropical regions of Asia, Europe and North America. Cypress trees are pyramidal in shape and can grow as high as 80 feet. It has small flowers with round brownish cones that usually grow near the tips of particular branches. In maturity, the aromatic leaves of Cypress resemble scales and are small, pressed closely to branch. Several species of Cypress produce different variations of its essential oil. Oil from Cupressus sempervirens is considered best in quality and can be extracted from the needles and twigs by water or steam distillation.
Fragrance: Cypress oil has a smoky, woody scent reminiscent of turpentine, though not quite as much as Juniper Berry oil. Its aroma has spicy and resinous top notes with sweet balsamic undertones.
Fragrant Effect: The scent of Cypress is cooling and calming, and is an excellent aid for meditation particularly for the grieving or in pain. A traditional ingredient in purifying incense, Cypress has a protecting and refreshing scent that helps improve the flow of stagnant energy within the body. It is a symbol of eternity and is believed to increase wisdom and strength, as well as provide psychic protection.
Blends Well With: Cypress essential oil can be used in combination with woody and fruity essential oils such as Ambrette Seed, Benzoin, Bergamot, Cardamom, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Juniper Berry, Labdanum, Lavender, Lemon, Mandarin, Marjoram, Maroc Chamomile, Pine, Sandalwood and Sweet Orange.
Therapeutic Properties: Essential oil of Cypress is a well-known tonic for the circulatory system. Gentle application to affected areas can lessen the presence of varicose veins. Cypress oil is also a valuable astringent that can be used to treat any case wherein there is an excess of fluid, such as incontinence, bilious attacks, heavy menstruation, bleeding gums, oedema and excessive perspiration. It can also be used as a wash or ointment to cure piles.
Aromatherapeutic Use: Cypress essential oil is antispasmodic, particularly helpful in the bronchial area. It is one of the best oils to use during bouts of asthma. Cypress oil can also be used to regulate menstruation and relieve other menstrual issues such as pain and excessively heavy flow. It is best used during the early stages of menopause.
Constituents: Some of the main chemical components in Cypress essential oil are pinene, camphene, sylvestrene, cymene and sabinol.

Safety Issues: Cypress oil is generally regarded as non-sensitizing, non-irritant and non-toxic.
